A powerful runner with surprising speed, he began his pro career in the Canadian League in 1972 and led Calgary in rushing in 1973. Robert joined the Chicago Fire of the WFL in 1974 and opened 1975 with the WFL's Chicago Winds before the club disbanded. He was picked up by Portland.

He played football for two different New Orleans high schools and also ran track. Gene's hometown is Marrero, Louisiana."
